What Psalm 23:4 Means for Believers Today | FNE234

October 9, 2026By Roy Studmire5 min read

Psalm 23:4 is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible. People read it at funerals, pray it in hospital rooms, and hold onto it through the hardest seasons of their lives. It is also the verse printed across the back of every FNE234 piece. Here is what the verse says, where it comes from, and why it means so much to us.

"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

Psalm 23:4 (NIV)

Older translations such as the King James Version put it this way: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." Both translations carry the same promise.

Who Wrote Psalm 23

Psalm 23 is a psalm of David. Before he became king of Israel, David was a shepherd. He spent years in open country keeping sheep alive, leading them to water, finding them grass, and defending them from lions and bears. When he wrote "The Lord is my shepherd," he was describing a job he knew from the inside.

That background shapes the whole psalm. David pictures himself as one of the sheep and God as the shepherd who provides, guides, and protects. Verse 4 is where that picture is tested.

The Valley of the Shadow of Death

The Hebrew word behind "the shadow of death" can also be translated "deep darkness." That is why some Bibles say "the darkest valley" and others say "the valley of the shadow of death." In the hill country where David kept sheep, the narrow valleys could be dark in the middle of the day, and they were where predators waited.

David is honest about the valley. He names it as the darkest place on the journey, and he also says he walks through it. The valley is a place you pass through on the way somewhere else, and the shepherd is the one leading you out the other side.

"I Will Fear No Evil"

The danger in the valley is real, and David still says he will not be ruled by fear. His confidence rests on something outside himself, and he gives the reason in the very next words: "for you are with me."

This is the heart of the verse. Courage in Psalm 23 comes from presence. God's nearness is what turns fear into trust. At FNE234 we call this taking dominion over fear: you can admit that something is frightening and still refuse to let it lead you, because you know who is walking beside you.

From "He" to "You"

Read Psalm 23 slowly and you will notice something easy to miss. In verses 1 through 3, David talks about God: "He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters." In verse 4, right as he enters the dark valley, he starts talking to God: "for you are with me."

When the path got hardest, David moved from describing God to speaking with Him. The darkest part of the psalm is also its most personal moment, and many believers find the same thing is true in their own lives.

The Rod and the Staff

A shepherd in David's time carried two tools. The rod was a short, heavy club used to drive off wild animals and protect the flock. The staff was a long pole, often hooked at the end, used to guide sheep, pull them back from danger, and lift them out of places they could not climb out of alone.

Together they describe how God cares for His people. The rod stands for His protection, and the staff stands for His guidance and rescue. David says these comfort him because they prove the shepherd is close enough to use them.

Why We Wear It

Psalm 23:4 is how our founder, Roy Studmire, lives. The verse carried him through the hardest season of his life, and when he started this line in 2023, it was the obvious place to begin. The first piece was a black hoodie he made for himself. He wore it everywhere, and people kept asking what it said. You can read the full story on The Story page.

The verse runs across the back of every piece. You carry it into every room you enter, and the people behind you can read it as you walk. For many of the people who wear FNE234, that back print is a declaration of faith that speaks before they say a word. It all comes back to one line we hold onto in every season: For God Is With Me.

Carrying Psalm 23:4 This Week

  • Memorize it. Say the verse out loud each morning until you know it by heart, so it is ready when you need it.
  • Name your valley. Pray the verse with the specific situation you are facing in mind, and speak to God directly the way David did.
  • Read the whole psalm. Psalm 23 is only six verses long. Reading it start to finish shows that the valley sits between green pastures and a prepared table.
  • Share it. Send the verse to someone who is walking through something hard this week.

Whatever valley you are in right now, you are not walking through it alone.
